Arunachal Pradesh — Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains
Arunachal Pradesh is the largest and least-travelled state of the Northeast, a vertical landscape of river gorges, cloud forest and 4,000-metre passes that rises from the Assam plains to the Tibetan border. Twenty-six major tribes live here, each with its own language, weave and architecture, and much of the state still requires an Inner Line Permit — which is exactly why the valleys feel untouched.
The classic route runs Guwahati or Tezpur to Bhalukpong, up through Dirang and over the 13,700 ft Sela Pass to Tawang, India's largest monastery town. Further east, Ziro's rice-fields and Apatani villages and the Siang river country near Pasighat make longer loops possible. Roads are mountain roads: expect 6 to 8 hour driving days on a route that rewards every hour of it.

Tawang Monastery
Founded in 1680, Galden Namgey Lhatse is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world, birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama and home to around 450 monks. The three-storey assembly hall holds an eight-metre gilded Buddha, and the library preserves centuries-old Kangyur manuscripts. Attend the early-morning prayer session — the horns and chanting inside the dukhang are the memory people take home.
Sela Pass and Paradise Lake
At 13,700 ft, Sela is the gateway to Tawang and stays snow-lined for much of the year. The frozen Sela (Paradise) Lake sits right beside the road, and the Jaswant Garh war memorial a little below commemorates a soldier who held off Chinese troops for 72 hours in 1962. Hot tea and momos at the army canteen are part of the ritual.
Ziro Valley
A UNESCO tentative-list cultural landscape of terraced paddy where the Apatani people farm rice and fish in the same fields. Hong, Hari and Hija villages, bamboo groves, and the September Ziro Festival of Music make this the most relaxed stop in the state.
Dirang and Bomdila
Dirang's apple orchards, hot springs and 500-year-old dzong make a natural acclimatisation halt before Sela; Bomdila's monastery and craft centre give the first big Himalayan panorama on the drive up. Both are ideal one-night stops that break the climb sensibly.
Madhuri Lake and Bum La Pass
Beyond Tawang, Shonga-tser (Madhuri) Lake sits among drowned tree trunks at 12,000 ft, and Bum La Pass on the Indo-China border at 15,200 ft can be visited with a special permit arranged in Tawang. A high, stark, unforgettable half-day.
Namdapha and the Siang Valley
In the far east, Namdapha National Park spans altitudes from 200 to 4,500 metres and is the only park in the world with four big cats. The Siang around Pasighat offers Grade III–IV rafting and Adi tribal villages for travellers with time to go deep.

Rhododendrons in bloom, passes clear, and Tawang at its most photogenic. Nights are still cold above 8,000 ft, so pack layers.
Clear skies · October – November
Post-monsoon clarity, crisp mountain views and stable roads. The best window for photography and for the Ziro–Pasighat circuit.
Snow season · December – February
Tawang under snow is magical but Sela Pass can close for days at a time. We only run winter departures with flexible buffer nights.
How to reach
- By air
- Fly to Guwahati (GAU) or Tezpur (TEZ) for the Tawang circuit, and Dibrugarh (DIB) or Lilabari (IXI) for Ziro and the east. Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi (HGI), near Itanagar, now has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.
- By rail
- Rangapara North, Harmuti and Naharlagun stations connect the state with the Assam rail network; Naharlagun has a direct train from Delhi.
- By road
- All travel is by private 4x4 or Innova. Guwahati to Dirang is around 10 hours, Dirang to Tawang another 6. Helicopter service between Guwahati and Tawang operates weather permitting.
Travel tips
- An Inner Line Permit is mandatory for Indian citizens and a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals — Turopia files both, so send scanned ID at least 10 days before departure.
- Mobile coverage is patchy beyond Bomdila and only BSNL and Jio work reliably; carry cash as ATMs are scarce past Dirang.
- Altitude matters. Sleep at Dirang before crossing Sela rather than driving from the plains to Tawang in one push.
- Fuel up at Bhalukpong and Dirang; pumps between them are unreliable.
Culture: Monpa Buddhism in the west, Apatani and Nyishi animist traditions in the centre, Adi and Mishmi in the east — Losar, Nyokum and Solung are the festivals worth planning around.

Questions travellers ask about Arunachal Pradesh
Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit and foreigners a Protected Area Permit. Both are arranged by Turopia with your ID documents.
How long is the Tawang trip?
Seven nights from Guwahati is the comfortable minimum — Bhalukpong or Dirang, two nights Tawang, and a return via Bomdila.
Is Tawang suitable for elderly travellers?
It can be, with a slower itinerary and a night at Dirang for acclimatisation. Anyone with cardiac or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before crossing Sela.
Can foreigners visit Bum La Pass?
No. Bum La permits are issued to Indian nationals only, through the Tawang district administration and army.
