Kashmir — Paradise on Earth
The Kashmir Valley is a broad bowl at 1,600 metres ringed by the Pir Panjal and the greater Himalaya, with Dal Lake's houseboats and shikaras at its heart and Mughal gardens terraced up the hillsides above Srinagar. Beyond the city, Gulmarg's meadow becomes a ski resort in winter and carries the world's second-highest cable car; Pahalgam is the trailhead country of the Lidder valley; Sonmarg is the gateway to the Zoji La and Ladakh.
Turopia's Kashmir packages combine a houseboat night on Dal or Nigeen with hotel stays in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and can be extended over Zoji La to Kargil and Leh for travellers who want the full mountain crossing.

Dal Lake and Houseboats
Shikara rides through floating vegetable gardens and the morning market, cedar-panelled houseboats moored along the boulevard, and Char Chinar island at the centre. A night on a deluxe houseboat is the defining Kashmir experience.
Gulmarg Gondola
The cable car climbs to Kongdoori and then Apharwat at 3,979 metres — the second-highest operating gondola in the world. Skiing and snowboarding from December to March, meadow walks and golf on the world's highest green course in summer.
Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley
Betaab Valley, Aru, Chandanwari and the Baisaran meadow, with pony rides, trout streams and the trailhead of the Amarnath yatra. The quietest of the valley's hill stations.
Sonmarg and Thajiwas Glacier
The 'meadow of gold' at 2,800 metres, an 80 km drive from Srinagar, with a short pony ride or walk to the Thajiwas glacier and the road onward to Zoji La and Ladakh.
Mughal Gardens
Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi, terraced with chinar avenues and water channels fed by mountain springs, laid out in the 17th century by Mughal emperors who summered here.
Doodhpathri and Yusmarg
Less-visited alpine meadows within a day of Srinagar, with pine forest, streams and none of the crowds of Gulmarg — a good addition for a second visit or a longer stay.

Spring · March – May
Tulip garden in bloom in April, almond blossom in March, and green meadows opening up as snow retreats.
Summer · June – August
The most comfortable weather and the peak family season; also the window for the Great Lakes trek.
Winter · December – February
Snowbound Gulmarg for skiing, frozen Dal edges and dramatic landscapes; Srinagar–Gulmarg road can close briefly after heavy snowfall.
How to reach
- By air
- Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR), Srinagar, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
- By rail
- Jammu Tawi (JAT) is the main railhead, around 260 km and 7–8 hours from Srinagar; the Banihal–Baramulla line links the valley internally.
- By road
- NH-44 via the Jawahar Tunnel and the new Banihal bypass. Gulmarg is 50 km from Srinagar, Pahalgam 90 km, Sonmarg 80 km.
Travel tips
- Book houseboats through a verified operator — quality varies enormously and photos online are often outdated.
- Gondola tickets for Phase II sell out early; we pre-book where the system allows.
- Carry warm layers even in May for Gulmarg and Sonmarg; the temperature drops sharply with altitude.
- Pony and sledge rates are negotiable — agree the price and route before you start.

Is Kashmir safe for tourists?
Tourist circuits — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg — operate normally and are heavily visited. We monitor advisories and keep itineraries flexible.
How many days do I need?
Six nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg comfortably, including a houseboat night.
When can I see the tulip garden?
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden usually opens for three to four weeks from late March or early April.
Can I combine Kashmir with Ladakh?
Yes, from June to September when Zoji La is open. Add four to five nights for Kargil and Leh with acclimatisation.
