Tripura — Palaces, Rock Carvings and Royal Lakes
Tripura was ruled by the Manikya dynasty for over five centuries, and that history is still standing: a lake palace built by a maharaja who admired Rajasthan, an art-deco royal residence in Agartala, and a hillside of colossal rock reliefs whose origins nobody can fully date.
The state is compact — most sights are within three hours of Agartala — which makes it an easy three-night addition to a wider Northeast itinerary, and the Jampui Hills add an orange-scented highland finish for those with more time.

Neermahal
A red-and-white water palace in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, built in 1930 as a summer retreat for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore. Reached by boat; the Hindu-Islamic hybrid architecture is best seen in late afternoon light.
Unakoti
A hillside of gigantic bas-relief rock carvings and stone idols dating to the 7th–9th centuries, including a 30-foot Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava head, set among waterfalls and forest. India's most atmospheric under-visited archaeological site.
Ujjayanta Palace
The former royal palace in Agartala, now a state museum spread across Mughal-style gardens and domed halls, with excellent galleries on Northeast tribal life.
Jampui Hills
Tripura's highest range on the Mizoram border, known for orange orchards, Lushai villages and a November orange festival. Sunrise and cloud-sea views from Betlingchhip.
Sepahijala and Tripura Sundari Temple
A wildlife sanctuary famed for spectacled langur and clouded leopard, and the 500-year-old Matabari temple at Udaipur, one of India's 51 Shakti Peethas.

- Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IXA), Agartala, with direct flights from Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.
- By rail
- Agartala railway station connects to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi via the Lumding line.
- By road
- NH-8 runs the length of the state; Agartala to Unakoti is around 5 hours, to Neermahal 1.5.
Travel tips
- No permit is required for Tripura, making it the easiest Northeast state to add on.
- Unakoti involves a steep flight of steps — allow two hours on site.
- Neermahal boat services stop by late evening; check the last return.
