Nepal — Himalaya, Heritage and Jungle
Nepal fits eight of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, a Gangetic jungle full of rhino and tiger, and seven UNESCO World Heritage monument zones in the Kathmandu Valley alone into a country the size of a large Indian state. That density is why a week here feels like three.
The standard Turopia circuit is Kathmandu for the durbar squares, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath; Pokhara for the Annapurna panorama, Phewa Lake and Sarangkot sunrise; and Chitwan for jeep safaris and canoe rides. Everest scenic flights, Nagarkot sunrise and Lumbini can all be added.

Kathmandu Durbar Squares
Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur each have a royal square of pagoda temples, palace courtyards and woodcarving that ranks among the finest in Asia. Bhaktapur, largely traffic-free, is the most atmospheric and worth a full half-day.
Pashupatinath and Boudhanath
The riverside cremation ghats and Shiva temple complex of Pashupatinath, and the vast white stupa of Boudhanath ringed by Tibetan monasteries — visit Boudha at dusk when the kora fills with butter lamps.
Pokhara and Sarangkot
Phewa Lake with the Machhapuchhre reflection, the World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls and Gupteshwor cave, and a pre-dawn drive to Sarangkot for sunrise over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Paragliding here is world-class.
Chitwan National Park
Terai grassland and sal forest holding greater one-horned rhino, gharial, sloth bear and Bengal tiger. Jeep safaris, dugout canoe rides on the Rapti, elephant breeding centre and Tharu cultural evenings.
Nagarkot and Everest Flight
Nagarkot's ridge, 32 km from Kathmandu, gives a broad Himalayan sunrise including Everest on clear days; the one-hour mountain flight from Kathmandu puts you level with the peak itself.
Lumbini
The birthplace of the Buddha, with the Maya Devi temple, Ashokan pillar and a monastic zone where dozens of countries have each built a monastery in their own style.

Rhododendron forests in bloom, good trekking conditions and warm valleys, with some haze building by May.

Winter is cold but clear at lower altitudes; monsoon brings rain, leeches on trails and flight delays.
How to reach
- By air
- Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu, with direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Varanasi and Bengaluru. Pokhara and Bhairahawa also have international terminals.
- By rail
- No direct rail into Nepal for tourists; Indian travellers often rail to Gorakhpur, Raxaul or Siliguri and cross by road.
- By road
- Land borders at Sunauli, Raxaul, Kakarbhitta and Panitanki. Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 km and 6–7 hours by road, or a 25-minute flight.
Travel tips
- Indian nationals do not need a passport or visa but must carry photo ID — voter ID or Aadhaar — and passports are still the smoothest option.
- Indian currency is accepted, but ₹2,000 and ₹500 notes are restricted; carry smaller notes or exchange in Kathmandu.
- Domestic flights are weather-dependent; keep a buffer day before international departures.
- For trekking, TIMS cards and area permits are mandatory and arranged in advance.

Do Indians need a visa for Nepal?
No. Indian nationals travel visa-free with valid photo identification; a passport or voter ID is recommended over Aadhaar for air travel.
How many days for Nepal?
Six nights covers Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. Eight to ten allows Nagarkot, Lumbini or a short Annapurna trek.
Is Chitwan worth it after Kaziranga?
Yes — the habitat and experience differ, with canoe safaris, Tharu culture and a strong chance of rhino sightings up close.
