Darjeeling — Queen of the Hills
Darjeeling was built by the British as a summer escape and became the most famous tea district in the world. The town clings to a ridge at 2,042 metres, with Kanchenjunga filling the northern horizon on clear mornings and the toy train still puffing along the road on its two-foot gauge, a UNESCO World Heritage railway since 1999.
Turopia pairs classic Darjeeling — Tiger Hill sunrise, Batasia Loop, Ghoom Monastery, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute — with quieter Kalimpong and the Dooars forest belt, or extends into Sikkim over the Teesta bridge for a longer Eastern Himalayan circuit.

Tiger Hill Sunrise
The 4 am drive to 2,590 metres for the moment the first light hits Kanchenjunga and, on the clearest winter mornings, Everest appears 170 km away on the left. Book the observatory's upper tier to avoid the roadside crush.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The toy train has run since 1881. The Darjeeling–Ghoom joyride with a halt at Batasia Loop takes two hours and passes the Gorkha war memorial garden; steam services run on select departures and sell out fast.
Batasia Loop and Ghoom
A spiralling track built to lose height, encircling a memorial garden with a 360-degree mountain view, and just above it Ghoom's Yiga Choeling monastery with its 15-foot Maitreya Buddha.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
Founded in 1854, one of the oldest gardens in Darjeeling and walkable from town. Factory tours during plucking season show withering, rolling and drying, and end with a tasting of first and second flush.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Zoo
The institute founded after the 1953 Everest ascent, with Tenzing Norgay's memorial and an outstanding museum, sharing a campus with the Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park's snow leopard and red panda breeding programmes.
Mirik and Kalimpong
Mirik's Sumendu Lake and pine walks make a good half-day en route from Bagdogra; Kalimpong's flower nurseries, Deolo Hill, Durpin Monastery and colonial Dr Graham's Homes make an easy two-night extension.

Peak season · March – May
Clear skies, blooming rhododendron and the busiest streets of the year. First-flush tea is being plucked.
Best views · October – December
Post-monsoon clarity for Kanchenjunga and Everest sightings from Tiger Hill; cold mornings, sunny days.
Off season · June – September
Monsoon rain, landslides on NH-110 and misted views, though the tea gardens are spectacularly green and rates are low.
How to reach
- By air
- Bagdogra (IXB) is 68 km and about 3 hours away by road.
- By rail
- New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead, 70 km from Darjeeling, with the toy train also running from there for those with a full day to spare.
- By road
- Hill Cart Road via Kurseong or the Rohini road via Mirik. Winter fog can slow the last hour, so we schedule daytime arrivals.
Travel tips
- Tiger Hill vehicles leave at 3.30–4 am and the road jams by 5 — an early departure and pre-booked ticket make the difference.
- Layer up: even in April the pre-dawn temperature can be near freezing at the viewpoint.
- Buy tea from an estate outlet or a reputed store like Nathmull's rather than street vendors.
- Darjeeling's town centre is steep and vehicle-restricted around the Mall — pack light for hotel transfers.

How many days for Darjeeling?
Three nights is right for Darjeeling itself; four to five if you add Kalimpong or Mirik.
Is the toy train worth it?
Yes — the Darjeeling–Ghoom joyride is the practical version. Book online well ahead, especially for steam departures.
Can I see Everest from Tiger Hill?
On very clear days from late October to February, yes. Kanchenjunga is visible far more often.
Can Darjeeling be combined with Sikkim?
Easily. Darjeeling to Gangtok is around 4 hours, and most of our Eastern Himalaya packages cover both.
